The long awaited Zoning Bylaw amendments to allow Garden Suites in Toronto are 1 big step closer to being approved!
On January 12th, the Planning & Housing Committee of Toronto City Council will consider the proposed amendments to the Zoning Bylaws to permit Garden Suites. The proposal is substantially the same as the first draft that we previously shared with you other than a minor tweak around access to parking spaces.

When will I be able to apply for a permit?
Not so fast! This is the first step to Council approving changes to the bylaw. Assuming that this proposal gets the blessing of the Planning & Housing Committee on January 12th, then it will go to the February full Council meeting for final approval. Often the full Council endorses the decisions of the committees but as this issue affects all Wards in the City, it is likely to generate some discussion at Council.
If the bylaw gets passed in February, it will take some time for the final legal buts to be completed before we can submit permit applications for Garden Suites. We hope to be able to do so in early Spring 2022.
The public is invited to submit comments to the Committee in writing in advance of the meeting. Details can be found on the official notice of the meeting that can be found here:
Daniel Hall will be making a deputation to the Committee regarding some of the proposed rules in particular bringing them into better alignment with the recently amended Laneway Suite bylaws.
